I can’t get over the parallels between The Reichenbach Fall and the last episode of House. House has always been the American medical drama version of Sherlock Holmes, but this really hits home. Spoilers ahead.
House fakes his death in order to protect Wilson. In doing so he lets everyone believe that he died in disgrace, and he has to give up his
detective medical work all in order to be with Wilson during his last five months.
House has always been considered selfish and abrasive by others, and people only put up with him because of what he is able to do with his intellect. Everything has been leading up to this final moment - to decide whether he will commit the ultimate selfish act, or protect his friend. And in the end he redeems himself.
Let’s look at the funeral scene. Wilson’s reaction here is the exact opposite of John’s: he starts off trying to praise House, but is then is overcome and lashes out against him. Whereas John begins with “there were times I didn’t even think you were human” and ends pleading for a miracle.
On the note of miracles.. House never did have his one last revelation, miraculously curing Wilson. And in the end that is beautiful. His last miracle is being alive, and being able to spend the rest of Wilson’s life together.
"SHUT UP YOU IDIOT" - if season three of Sherlock has a reveal half as beautiful as that, I will surely be undone.
